In the vineyards, hand-harvesting and other traditional approaches are taken wherever they work best. These are complemented by the combined 70 acres of the Ballestra and River parcels, which envelop the winery. Two parcels, totaling 100 acres, are within the renowned To Kalon Vineyard. The estate vineyards of Opus One, comprised of 4 parcels, sit in the western portion of the famed Oakville AVA. This essential human touch brings forth the characteristics of each vintage through a balance of delicate coaxing and gentle restraint. Here, the vineyard team cultivates five traditional Bordeaux grape varieties with experience, passion and dedication. Opus One, the realized dream of two men: was founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, legendary proprietor of Château Mouton Rothschild, and renowned Napa Valley Vintner Robert Mondavi. The blending of wine-lots across vintages and extended barrel aging give Overture a supple structure and silky texture. The classic blackberry and cassis character of Cabernet Sauvignon melds seamlessly with the black cherry, red currant and violet from the Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. This remarkable terroir expresses itself in the complex aromas, flavors and especially, textures of Overture. Overture is a timeless reflection of our Opus One estate vineyards. However, Overture’s third blending aspect – that of marrying multiple vintages – yields a softer, rounder expression of our estate that can be enjoyed upon release. Overture reflects the winemaker’s artistry by showcasing the talent of blending five traditional Bordeaux grape varieties and capturing terroir characteristics of the same variety grown in different soils. Overture shows generous dark fruit aromas and flavors with a soft, supple mid-palate. Overture is a true expression of Opus One’s estate vineyardsĪ timeless expression of our estate vineyards, Overture is full bodied but approachable in its youth. It is a multi vintage wine, made from a blend of the five classic Bordeaux varieties and aged for 18 months in French oak. Drinking Window 2020 - 2030.Overture is the second wine of Opus One originally created in 1993 and for many years available only at the winery. This is focused and ready to drink and impresses with its rippling silk texture. It has a gentle but confident tannic frame and mouthwatering lift on the finish. This is supple with clear ripe berry fruits, generous and fully ripe, tempered by white pepper spice and smoked cedar notes. Extended barrel aging gives the wine an elegant texture accentuated by round tannins and a soft mouthfeel. Notes of bright cherry and red currant are underpinned by more earthy tones of ground cocoa, cedar and vanilla. Overture displays a vibrant garnet color with expressive aromas of fresh red fruit. Yet, when these lots are afforded additional time in barrel along with the added flexibility of blending across multiple vintages, the final wine achieves a remarkable elegance and complexity. This scrutiny carries through the blending process and certain lots will not be included in the final Opus One blend. Every acre of the estate vineyard is meticulously farmed with the attention to detail and singular focus required to produce Opus One. Beginning in 1993 and following in the tradition of great Bordeaux estates, Opus One created a fine second wine called Overture.
